OLD NEW - New ways of seeing in a binary world

Seminar
Location: Babel

A live talk show hosted by Tricia Wang starring Jason 'Timbuktu' Diakité & Alqumit Alhamad.

As the world changes, so too do people’s needs, no more so than when it comes to self-expression. In a landscape where many of these changes are based on polarizing, binary values, how do people find spaces to express their identities?

To explore this question, we’re kicking off 2017 with a talk show hosted by American tech ethnographer and three times The Conference speaker, Tricia Wang. Tricia will explore topics of identity, community and art starting with one of Sweden’s most beloved artists —hip hop artist Jason Timbuktu Diakité, whose political messages and infectiously danceable beats have penetrated the Swedish pop cultural consciousness. The show will wrap up with Alqumit Alhamad, a new Malmö citizen who recently fled from ISIS controlled Raqqa, Syria and has chosen Sweden as his new home because of its extensive protection of gay rights.

Jason and Alqumit will speak about their connection to Malmö, commitment to expressing political views in their art, and role as cultural ambassadors of generations of people who have come before them. People who don’t have the privilege of a platform.

This talk show marks the beginning of a dialogue that makes the complexities of creating a sense of self visible.

We look forward to having you join us for what promises to be an enlightening and much needed discussion.

And oh! The bar is open for some afternoon delight.

You can watch the whole event on our Youtube channel.

Circular design, untapped resources and disrupted distribution - the future of food.

Seminar
Location: Gro'up

A seminar on new ways to consume food. We will eat and talk about food, what is not to love?

Food is a topic that engage. Everyone eats and everyone has opinions on food. Food supply will be one of humanities greatest challenges in the decades to come. Climate change and soil depletion is reducing the arable land at the same time as global food demand is increasing rapidly.

We need to drastically change the way we produce and consume food, both to reduce the effects from agriculture on climate change and to produce more food on less land. This means new opportunities for entrepreneurs to start producing food, and a lot of new and exciting products for us all to consume.

We will listen to presentation from entrepreneurs and novel food producers and we will hear about new ways to consume food. We no longer need to go to the supermarket, or do we?

We will eat and talk about food, what is not to love?

What You'll Learn

  • Some of the problems with our present food production and how it is a design issue
  • Why everyone should consider becoming food producers.
  • How to become more informed consumers.

Festivity
Location: Malmö Konsthall

Guided tour of the exhibition Subjektiv

Come join a guided tour at Malmö Konsthall! Your guide will take you through the exhibition "Subjektiv".

This exhibition, entitled Subjektiv, is curated by the editorial board of the Scandinavian art journal Objektiv. Its point of departure is potential relations between art, politics and subjectivity in a time when the basis of democratic subjecthood is called into question.

The exhibition brings together artworks from the last years that speak to the current political situation through their strategic staging of subjectivity and its political potential or impotence.

All the works are camera-based – photographs and films, collages and a poster project – and span from straight documentary to a post-internet aesthetics of the interface. While radically different in strategies and aesthetics, these works all investigate the friction between the subjective, the collective, and the political.

Face the facts

Seminar
Location: SVT

An SVT seminar on the challenges of media in a post truth reality

An SVT seminar on the challenges of media in a post truth reality where connectivity is queen, facts can be alternative and breaking news is breaking new grounds.

To be a relevant, reliable and trustworthy source of information, connecting and interacting with your users is essential. Media consumers today are blessed with a seemingly unlimited access to knowledge, entertainment and information. But we also inhabit a ‘post-truth’ world where filter bubbles, fake news, and alternative facts tear at the very fabric of reality, where opinions and feelings sometimes challenge objective truth. Facing this, how do you build meaningful relationships and even develop relevant content together with your target group? SVT (the Swedish public service broadcaster) will share with you our best experiences and insights – from examples of how we have built social media strategies to what we learned when the threat of terror challenged traditional news coverage – especially for the youngest audience. How we work to stay in touch with users, interact and build meaningful communities And how open research can become content in itself.

Karin Ekman – Head of social media, SVT News, will reflect on reliability and trust in news reporting in a time when fake news and disinformation suddenly became the buzzwords of the day. She will share with you how SVT News have built their social media strategy and the results of the commitment to connect with a younger audience.

When terror strikes, like it did in Stockholm in April, kids turn to their mobiles for information. Lowe Östberg, executive producer for Lilla Aktuellt, SVT’s much acclaimed news broadcast for kids, will talk about their new app Mixer, which targets the elusive 10 – 13-year olds and provides a news platform for them based on dialogue, actuality and fact checking.

Anna Bylund & Maria Karlsson Thörnqvist - Producer and Project Manager at SVT kids will give you an insight SVT’s ’Project Z’, a project which started out as a research tool to explore ways to connect and interact with the elusive generation Z - and ended up becoming the product itself.

Aida Pourshahidi - SVT profile (Lilla Aktuellt) and moderator, will safely guide you through the morning’s program.

What You'll Learn

  • How to establish and maintain credibility as a media partner
  • Methods for connecting and interacting with the younger audience

OUR CREATIVE FUTURE. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?

Seminar

Join in building the future of innovative Nordic Creative Industries in a digital world.

At the Cool and Creative Nordic conference, hosted by Nordic Innovation, we will investigate the obstacles and opportunities that digitalisation poses for scalable consumer contents in creative industries.

Nordic collaboration in the creative industries holds much promise. Much work is already being done on creating a unitary legal framework for scalable consumer contents like games, TV productions, digital media, design and music. In the 2017 European Commission White Paper on the future of Europe, one of the scenarios put forward is called Those Who Want More Do More. It is clear that the Nordic countries want more. The main themes at this seminar will be growth, internationalisation and cross-sector innovation, and we will discuss how we can remove obstacles to a Nordic single market.

The event will be moderated by Mia Odabas.

The speakers include, among others: Claudia Olsson, a newly appointed Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and an innovation leader and speaker in the field of digital transformation and Bart Ahsmann Managing Director of CLICKNL, the Dutch Creative Industries knowledge and innovation network.

The event is curated by Doc Lounge, an organization specializing in distribution, creative outreach and event screenings of new Nordic and international documentaries.

Documentary: SILVANA (By Olivia Kastebring, Mika Gustafson, Christina Tsiobanelis / Sweden / 2017)

With her uncompromising lyrics against all forms of oppression, Swedish rapper Silvana Imam has taken Scandinavia by storm. She uses her razor-sharp tongue to spotlight movements taking place in today's society, embodying the voice of a new generation along the way.

This film follows Silvana from underground artist to icon, as she wins several major awards and forms an almost mythical relationship with Swedish pop-artist, Beatrice Eli. However, after just one year in the limelight, it all came to a sudden halt. Silvana crashes under the pressure, fed-up with the the implications of being labeled a “strong female.” She decides to start showing new sides of herself “because there are no super-heroes, just human beings.”

The film is the debut documentary from the three Swedish directors Mika Gustafson, Olivia Kastebring and Christina Tsiobanelis, produced by Stina Gardell and Anna Weitz (Mantaray Film) and distributed by TriArt Film.

USTWO MASTER CLASS - PERMISSION TO PLAY!

Master Class
Location: Ustwo

How to incorporate play into your business as part of fueling creativity and innovation.

Digital product studio ustwo invites you to a master class where you'll explore how to incorporate play into your business as part of fueling creativity and innovation.

Why is play so important to inventing and building new meaningful products and services? And how do you make time for it? At uswo, permission to play is closely linked to dealing with fear of failure. It enables our teams to break new grounds by accepting the failure as part of the process. But it also relies on a culture that allows for failure and knows how to celebrate it.

We will explore the notion of play in a collaborative culture and show some concrete examples from ustwo’s recent venture into digital play along with some spectacular failures (and learnings!) that came out of the process.

Martina Gobec (Head of Design) and Michael Rozenberg (Product Owner) both work at ustwo Nordics, where they focus on creating the best environment and conditions for the teams to explore and deliver high quality work. As builders of digital products, services and companies, ustwo strives for making a positive impact in people’s daily lives.

What You'll Learn

  • Examples of what happens when play is shortcut.
  • How you can integrate play into your business.
  • A tool to help you get started with designing your own playful experiments

FOO CAFE SEMINAR - HOW TO KILL A COMPANY

Seminar

The Entrepreneur’s guide to the startup graveyard

There are many ways to kill a company. One of the most common and most stupid ways to do it is to avoid contact with the market, that is - to avoid selling.

We get it. Maybe you don´t like it. Maybe you're not born a sales rep. And maybe you want to spend the first years as a startup, developing the perfect package before you start selling it.

Nevertheless, great business ideas are developed in relation to the market, in relation to potential customers. And customers won’t come running to you if you don’t talk to them. The fact is: You need to start selling.

So how can we get better at selling our ideas and products from day one? Lars Andersson, vice president of the software company Lundalogik and a true sales nerd with “down to earth”-attitude, will teach you the basic truths of successful sales.

(Un)planned culture

Seminar
Location: Inkonst

A seminar with Dimitri Hegemann, founder of Tresor, on the importance of alternative culture for urban life.

Cities develop and change over time and each new generation make their mark in the physical space, architectural appearance and the cultural life.

These transformations create new possibilities for experimental culture and innovativeness, something that cities strive to embrace in order to attract “’the right” kind of people, businesses and attention. Culture is becoming a vital part of strategic planning and development as well as a tool to achieve more just and diverse cities. But within this “cultural planning”, is there room for alternative and counter cultures to evolve and experiment? What part does alternative culture play in comparison with public art and culture institutions?

Dimitri Hegemann is a German nightclub owner, cultural activist and community organizer foremost known for founding the famous Berlin techno club, Tresor. Based on his own Berlin experiences, Dimitri will talk on the importance of alternative culture for urban life, change and development.

After the presentation Mathias Holmberg from White Arkitekter, will moderate a panel discussion hosted by Inkonst, The Conference & White Arkitekter.

The seminar is followed by The Conference official closing party. The party features Danish DJ collective Apeiron Crew & the Finnish live electro act Mono Junk.

What You'll Learn

  • How can different generations and ideas find place to experiment and evolve in cities of today and tomorrow?
  • What part does alternative culture play in relationship to public art and culture institutions? How can art and culture function as catalyst and inspiration for urban life and development?
